How this was calculated
- Fees from the State Department chart “United States Passport Fees”, October 2026 edition, and 22 CFR 22.1 ($50 application + $80 security surcharge = $130 for an adult book).
- Times from the processing-time page updated October 5, 2026: routine 4 to 6 weeks, expedited 2 to 3 weeks, mail up to 2 weeks each way. The earliest date leaves mail out, the latest adds both legs.
- Not included: photos, the price of faster USPS mail to the State Department (set by the facility), and any private expediter fee.
Estimate from the State Department’s published fees and processing times. Mailing times vary and the Department decides each case. Independent site, not affiliated with the Department of State; we sell no expediting service. Method and sources
The U.S. Department of State fee chart dated October 2026 sets the application fee at $130 for an adult passport book, $30 for an adult card and $160 for both, and at $100, $15 and $115 for children under 16. Those amounts are the same for a first passport on Form DS-11 and for an adult renewal on Form DS-82 or online. The difference is the execution fee: $35, charged only when you apply in person with a DS-11 and paid to the acceptance facility, not to the State Department. Three optional fees go on the State Department check: $60 for expedited processing, $26.87 for 1-3 day return delivery of a book, and $150 for a file search when you have no proof of citizenship. The highest possible bill for one adult, book and card with every option, is $431.87.
The seven numbers on the chart
Everything you can owe for a U.S. passport comes from seven lines of the State Department chart: the book, the card and the pair, each at an adult and a child price; the $35 execution fee; $60 for expedited service; $26.87 for 1-3 day delivery; and $150 for a file search. A correction of a data or printing error on Form DS-5504 is free, and a name change within one year of issue is free as well. The calculator above reads those lines from one file, so the amount it shows is the amount printed on the chart, and the tables under this text are generated from the same file.
The fee for an adult book is not a round number chosen for the chart. The federal fee schedule, 22 CFR 22.1, splits it into $50 of application services and an $80 security surcharge, the “enhanced border security fee”. For a child the application part is $20, with the same surcharge, which gives $100. The card has no surcharge, which is why it costs so much less.
Who receives which payment
When you apply in person, the money goes to two different places. The application fee and every option go on a single check or money order payable to “U.S. Department of State”, with the applicant’s name and date of birth in the memo line. The execution fee is a separate payment to the post office, clerk or library, and each facility decides how it takes it. When you renew by mail you send one check; when you renew online or at a passport agency you pay by card. The result panel above writes the payee next to each amount, so you can prepare the right payments before you go.
The highest and the lowest bill
The cheapest passport document is a child’s card at $50 with the facility fee, or an adult card renewal at $30. The most expensive single application is an adult book and card, expedited, with 1-3 day delivery and a file search: $431.87. Most people pay $165 the first time and $130 at each renewal.
