Expedited passport: cost and how fast it is
Expediting is a State Department service, sold only by the State Department, for one fixed fee. It shortens processing, not the mail.

Arrives before your trip even with the slowest published times.
Official rule: routine service if you travel in 6 weeks or more.
How this was calculated
- Fees from the State Department chart “United States Passport Fees”, October 2026 edition, and 22 CFR 22.1 ($50 application + $80 security surcharge = $130 for an adult book).
- Times from the processing-time page updated October 5, 2026: routine 4 to 6 weeks, expedited 2 to 3 weeks, mail up to 2 weeks each way. The earliest date leaves mail out, the latest adds both legs.
- Not included: photos, the price of faster USPS mail to the State Department (set by the facility), and any private expediter fee.
Estimate from the State Department’s published fees and processing times. Mailing times vary and the Department decides each case. Independent site, not affiliated with the Department of State; we sell no expediting service. Method and sources
Expedited service costs $60 per application, paid to the U.S. Department of State on the same check as the application fee, and cuts processing to 2 to 3 weeks instead of 4 to 6. The State Department recommends it when you travel in less than 6 weeks. It does not include mail: add up to 2 weeks for the application to arrive and up to 2 weeks for the return, or $26.87 for 1-3 day delivery. An expedited renewal by mail with fast delivery costs $216.87 and can take up to 38 days door to door; a first adult book, $251.87 with the facility fee. You can expedite at an acceptance facility or on a mail renewal by writing “EXPEDITE” on the envelope, but not online. The Department commits to process expedited applications within 15 business days of receipt; if it does not, you may ask for the $60 back.
What the $60 buys
Expedited service moves your application into a faster processing stream at the agency: 2 to 3 weeks instead of 4 to 6. It comes with a written commitment of 15 business days, counted from the day the agency receives the file, and a refund of the fee if that is missed. The refund guide counts the business days, holidays excluded.
Pairing it with the mail options
Because processing is only one leg, an expedited application mailed in a standard envelope can still take 2 weeks to arrive. The calculator shows the effect of each option on the latest date. With expedited service and 1-3 day delivery, the worst case is 38 days; with Priority Mail Express bought at the facility, the outbound leg also shrinks, at a price the facility sets.
When expediting is not enough
Within 14 days of travel, or 28 days if you need a foreign visa, the State Department sends you to an agency appointment. Expedite before that window; once inside it, the appointment is the faster path, and the $60 is charged there anyway.
